How We Review Pet Insurance

Last reviewed : May 15, 2026

Every comparison and review on PetAssured.ca follows the same process. We're publishing it here so you can judge our work — and so insurers can hold us accountable when we get something wrong.

What we evaluate

For every provider, we look at seven dimensions:

  1. Coverage scope — what conditions, treatments, and procedures are eligible
  2. Reimbursement structure — percentage paid back, per-incident vs annual caps
  3. Deductible mechanics — annual vs per-condition, how it resets
  4. Exclusions — pre-existing conditions, breed-specific exclusions, age limits
  5. Waiting periods — how long before coverage activates
  6. Claim experience — how quickly payouts are processed, direct vet pay availability
  7. Canadian availability — provinces served, regulatory standing, customer service hours

How we verify

How we stay independent

PetAssured.ca earns affiliate commissions when readers buy a policy through links on this site. This funds the research. To keep rankings honest:

What we are not

We are not licensed insurance brokers, agents, or financial advisors. Our content is editorial — comparative analysis based on public policy documents and our own research. For binding quotes or licensed advice specific to your situation, contact the insurer directly or speak with a licensed broker in your province.
